I. Background Information:

Project VIE/01/014 – Capacity Building for Disaster
Mitigation in Vietnam, funded by United Nations Development
Program (UNDP), Royal Embassy of Netherlands and Government
of Luxembourg, was approved by the Government of Vietnam in
April 2002. The development objective of this project is to
implement the Second National Strategy and Action Plan for
Disaster Mitigation in Vietnam, and to further strengthen
the national capacity of the country to mitigate the impact
of disaster that increase the poverty, reduce environment
protection and prevent sustainable development. In order to
achieve this general objective, the project has following
objectives of 5 project components:

1) Reduce the vulnerability of Central Viet Nam to disasters
through the successful implementation of the Natural
Disaster Mitigation Partnership (NDM-Partnership) through
improved coordination and cooperation of disaster mitigation
efforts by both Government agencies and Donors and through
awareness raising and enhanced capacity of local authorities
and grassroots people. The Project will also serve for
Donors, who wish to avail themselves of this facility, to
fund the projects under the framework of the Partnership
through delegation of management authorities to UNDP and the
Partnership Steering Committee.
