Vietnam metro reports high rate of abortions
Last updated: 12/1/2011 15:05

For every five babies born in Ho Chi Minh City, four others were aborted, a
city health official said Tuesday.

To Thi Kim Hoa, deputy director of the city Health Department, released the
figures at a meeting with representatives from the Ministry of Health, the
city government and hospitals, *Saigon Tiep Thi *reported.

Hoa said the abortion rate in the city is three times higher than the
country's average, with the number of abortions equal to 76 percent of the
number of children born.

Figures from hospitals showed that 2 percent of the abortion procedures
were performed on girls less than 16 years old. Most were performed on
women between 16 and 49 years of age.

The official blamed the high abortion rate on the increasing immigrant
worker population, loose family control on young people and poor pregnancy
knowledge among them.

The baby sex rate between boys and girls in the city also increased from
109/100 according to late 2010 figures to 112.3/100, Hoa said.
