VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Mekong Tourism Development Project (MTDP) is part of a
regional initiative supported by a loan from the ADB
(VIE-1971) aiming at promoting sustainable tourism
development and poverty reduction. The project is executed
by VNAT-Vietnam National Administration of Tourism and is
being implemented in the provinces of An Giang and Tien
Giang. In order to implement the project Part B (Pro-poor
community-based tourism), the project is seeking a highly
qualified National and International Handicraft Specialist.
Tasks: His/Her tasks shall include, but not be limited to,
the following:
(i) Review in the three sites the current production of
handicraft, including quality, productivity and design; in
particular the handicraft specialist shall compile
information on the role of women in the handicraft
production;
(ii) Identify the shortcomings in marketing and promotion
obtaining baseline information on the trade of handicraft
items in the sites;
(iii) Investigate the authenticity of the patterns being
used (in the case of production made by ethnic minority Cham
and Khmer communities in An Giang;
Requirements:
- At least five years of proven relevant experience in the
field of handicraft research on the production, design and
marketing and promotion in Vietnam;
- A knowledge of Vietnam poverty reduction policies in
particular as far as ethnic minorities and women as
vulnerable groups are concerned;
- Proficiency in written and oral Vietnamese; English.
The following credentials will be assets:
- A good knowledge of English;
- A sound knowledge of Vietnam governmental and
administrative procedures.
- Experience in advising international cooperation projects
in the development field.
- A good understanding of the tourism sector in Vietnam.
Expected Outputs:
The Handicraft Research Specialist will produce a
comprehensive report with an in depth analysis of all
aspects related to handicraft production in each of the
three sites.
The report shall:
- provide an analytical review of handicraft production in
the three sites
- provide advise on training needs regarding design
(patterns), improved productivity and
environmentally-friendly dying techniques;
- Advise on ways to improve the marketing and promotion
aspects with the aim of increasing income by boosting trade;
- provide recommendations on business plan development and
specific advise on training needs in this area for women;
Duty Station for the position: Hanoi with travel to the two
provinces.
