ADS Pre-Departure Project Vietnam

ADS Candidates Prepare for Take-off

A closing ceremony was held on Friday 21 October to mark the
completion of the Pre-departure training program for 142 ADS
candidates due to depart for Australia in January 2006. The
candidates have been participating in the program for up to
9 months during 2005 to prepare for their Australian
Government funded studies commencing in Australian
Universities in 2006. The pre-departure training program
aims to help the students improve their English and academic
skills before their departure to Australia to enrol at an
Australian University through the Australian Development
Scholarships (ADS) Program.
The ADS program in Vietnam is aligned closely to the goals
and objectives of the Vietnam-Australia Development
Cooperation Program and it forms an important part of the
development program, with up to 150 scholarships awarded to
qualified Vietnamese candidates each year. The ADS program
has operated in Vietnam since 1992 and, during this time,
more than 2,000 Vietnamese students have been trained in
Australia with the support of Australian government
scholarships. The program is worth a total of 15-16 million
Australian dollars per year (approximately 12 million USD).

All applicants for ADS must demonstrate the contribution of
their proposed study to either of the two key development
sectors of the Vietnam-Australia Development Cooperation
program: Governance and Rural Development. Candidates
selected for an ADS normally study for a Masters or PhD
degree – popular study areas include: Economics, Finance,
Accounting, Law, Agriculture, Forestry, Environmental
management, Water resource management and Fisheries.

Candidates for the ADS 2007 Intake will be selected by a
Joint Selection Committee including AusAID and MOET
officials in November 2005.

After the completion of the Pre-departure training program
most students were required to sit for an IELTS (English
Language) test which took place on 22 and 23 October in
Hanoi. Results of this test will be used to finalise the
placement for study at one of the 18 universities in
Australia, contracted by AusAID to provide training for ADS
awardees.

Candidates at the ADS Centre are working hard to prepare
themselves for their studies in Australia early next year.
They are aware of the contribution they can make to the
development of Vietnam upon their return home, as noted by
one of the ADS students: “For myself, I believe that upon my
return I will be more confident in providing policy advice
to senior tax officials. The program will equip me with new
knowledge and skills and enable me to carry out my policy
research in a more market-oriented approach, which will
assist the transition of my country. ”
